Why do so many of us crave sugary and fatty foods—even addictively? We’re often told to eat healthy and exercise more, but why is it so hard at times to make changes, even when we know those changes would be good for us? While food cravings seem commonplace, when do they become problematic for our health?
In this episode, we talk with Dr. Ashley Mason, an assistant psychiatry professor at the University of California San Franciso’s School of Medicine. Dr. Mason defines food cravings, and the point at which they’re problematic. She describes her research on stress-induced eating, and how some research today is starting to take more of an addiction lens to food, since food addictions share common characteristics—like cravings, binging, withdrawals, etc.—with other additions.
Dr. Mason covers how food addictions can impact mental health, and how they can cause diseases like type 2 diabetes, which is associated with a greater likelihood of having depression. She details how once our physical health starts to suffer, so can our mental health.
